I've found four summer cars that actually look pretty nice for the price(I've decided to raise my budget to $3000, as I've noticed $3k to be quite a good number.

Here's what I've got:

1989 Ford Mustang 5.0 Manual Convertible(Red on Red! :D) $2800

http://youngstown.craigslist.org/cto/4510274709…

1987 Porsche 924S Manual(RED!) $2990

1987 Porsche 944 Manual(Silver Shiny!) $2200

1986 Pontiac Fiero Manual(The one with dat V6) $1000

Summer car, project car. Something I can work on and improve what little car work skills I've got. Also so I can go to car shows and not feel left out because my car is "too modern".

Just something nice I'd like to have to myself, also so my dad can keep his 911 and I can have something that's mine and he can't touch it. So yeah, there are some good, bad and all around stupid reasons.

Depending on what it needs, this could be a pretty interesting choice. Its not fast, but you will be able to call it vintage and its pretty cheap at $1800.

Porsche

Pontiac Fiero

BMW

Chevy

Dodge(if I could find a Challenger)

Ford I would go with fox body. Porsche I would avoid unless you want a car to spend your summer fixing instead of driving (He said 3k budget you zealots.) Fiero would be ok with any motor because honestly you wanna put a turbo 3800 in there anyways. Cheap BMWs make me nervous but are more doable than the Porsche, I've actually seen some guys drive the balls off some e36 325 faster than e36 m3 and those are fairly cheap.

Chevy I would only recommend a third gen at this price, you're not going to get a ls1 for this money and my opinion on small block chevys is ls or carb. You're not getting a Challenger for 3k.

88 BMW: Best of the bunch, but not great for what you want.

66 Mustang: Way beyond your time, money, and likely ability level

89 Mustang: Off colored body pannels, aftermarket taillights, bad paint, needs a carb rebuild and its just rubbing me the wrong way. Guy does look desperate to sell though

83 944: Needs fuel lines and paint, pre 85.5 update. No go.

77 Comet: Rust is said way to many times. Not worth your time.

If you want classic American consider one of these.

I fear the Impala and Super 88 might not fit in the garage or driveway; which in retrospect, also means that Chrysler 300 I sent you wouldn't be practical either..

Also I am a sucker for the pre 85.5 dash style of the 944s. Even with the worse HVAC/AC I love that it's essentially a 924 interior.

Wheelbase on the Super 88 is 19 inches longer than your Focus. Impala is probably a good amount bigger

1984 318: No mention of miles is a worry. Auto trans tanks value. Lowest model

1986 944: No pics, no miles, need works. Sketchy, No go.

1986 944: High miles, looks rough around edges. Very risky buy. No interior mention

1986 Mustang: Lot of rust, thats enough for me to walk away. Frame looks okay though

1969 300: Huge, not what your looking for.

1990 325i: Rust is a question mark, sedan brings down value

1994 325i: Possible trans issues, means there is a trans issue. Avoid

This is going to be awesome! And I like how my suggestion got there. A few notes I have to add.

The most intreaging mustang is of course the Red on Red. I dont think it would be too common actually, I am starting to feel the Five-Point-Oh vibe.

The car that is for me, the most convincing, is the 924 S Red on beige. It looks pretty damn great, and I like the Sness of it.

The Corrado is like an inner battle with me. Yes, it is a 660 Corrado in blue! But its an Auto!!! But the low miles! But the AUTO! I dont know, I would have a damn hard time.

Whatever you do man, enjoy it! Have fun! And post it on Oppo.

when this does happen, I'm skipping Facebook and going straight here! I've never seen a red on red mustang which is why I posted that one.

I love the Corrado but no Manual!

Such decisions.

I might have to change my name if I stop the Porsche dreaming.

So far the only good ones are:

The E21

The '88 BMW

The E21 does fit every part of m criteria minus power, speed and torque but maybe it can make up for it in some other way.

Are there any more BMWs out there worth looking at? Anything with a I6 (anything bigger than a 4-cylinder?) and manual? BMWs seem to be my only hope right now.

How much are vintage M-Cars going for now?

89 Mustang: a bit sketchy. Has some questionable mods and was originally FI but is now carbed (?).

88 E30: NOPE NOPE NOPE. Automatic verts are the worst E30s ever made. The transmission isn't terrible, but the body roll and flex on verts is insanely bad.

"Sport edition" 944: there's no way in hell that's a $2500 car. At $1900, maybe. At $1500, definitely

Mercury comet: this thing will never run or be just right.

Mustang: this is very project level. Don't expect it to run by the end of the summer.

Over all? Keep looking

Kinja'd!!! Dsscats > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
06/19/2014 at 01:03

Kinja'd!!!0

84 E30: No mileage listed. Looks a bit scammy to me. Otherwise, not terrible.

944: could they have put any less info? Also, needs brake work, but cab drive it home?

Red 944: meh. Looks decent.

86 Fox Body: Holy fender rust, batman! Just know that you will almost never be able to fix that.

Chrysler 300: do you have a place to do engine work or a cheap mechanic? If so, NP.

1990 E30: if you think you can take on the engine work, it's a great deal. If not, it's a never ending nightmare.

Last E30: trans issues? That'll cost $1500 more to fix.

My overall thoughts? Stay away from 944s and E30s unless you are ready to do some serious and seriously expensive engine work. At this price, youre not looking at well maintained cars, and that won't be fun in the long run. I know everyone thinks of E30s as all mechanical and reliable, but its a myth. Go for something reliableish or easy to work on (especially something with a Chevy 350 because of cheap power and parts availability) like an old Supra or Honda CVCC. It won't be as Jalop, but it'll be a much better experience.

LOL no I don't want to be on fire and wet because it runs low on oil and the weather stripping sucks.

weather stripping sucks? Can't it be replaced?

And only the 4-cylinder cars from '84-85 can catch fire. If you get a V6 from '86-88 and especially an '88 with the newer suspension then you're golden.

All 4 cylinder models could combust. 88 is the best and last year. Weather stripping does suck. Maybe you could replace it?

Easier than the average Porsche, by virtue of the front engine layout. Harder than the average car, by virtue of being a Porsche.

I've found some potentially decent Mustangs to look at, what do you think of these?

Looks a tad bit sketchy. I'd be interested if it weren't for the unfair fact that Because of my dad and WW2, I am not allowed to have a car made by a Japanese maker(which is weird because Porsche is just fine -_-)

Oh and I forgot to tell you about that 944 I found, this one is just about damn near perfect.

Also, not sure how important ascetics are to you but this is one dope as hell Gran Torino. Ad claims it runs and drives.

I don't have a link to it because it was given to me via email, but here's what it says:

1984 Porsche 944

Porsche "Sport" seats(The seats will look like this, not sure how worn though)

Kinja'd!!!

Porsche Red(Guards Red)

Tab replaced the timing belt, motor mounts and a gasket when I bought the car.

The prior owner replaced the clutch shortly before he had to sell the car as a result of a job loss.

I think I have fewer than 5,000 on the car from the time I bought it.

NOTE: the 1984 is on-turbo, but it is easier to work on.

Bought car in 2008

The car has always been garage kept and doesn't appear to have any rust.

I am looking for somewhere around $3000 to $3500.

As much as the early-style dash is imperfect and inefficient with the AC and HVAC controls, and the radio placement is very poor, I still prefer the looks of it compared to the late style dash. The way I see it any 944 will be expensive in some way, with only marginal differences in cost.

That Gran Torino is very cool though. Bookmarked as well.
